Boxer Jermain Taylor facing multiple aggravated assault charges after threatening to kill family

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – Boxer Jermain Taylor is facing multiple charges after an incident Monday afternoon .Taylor
will be charged with five counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, and possession of marijuana.

Taylor was questioned by Little Rock police Monday afternoon for discharging a firearm, according to the Little Rock Police Department.

The victim, Thelton Smith, tells KATV that the altercation apparently started after Smith and his son went to meet the middleweight boxing champion. Video of the two meeting shows Taylor smiling, posing with Smith’s son and one of his championship belts. But Smith said it’s what happened afterward that caused Taylor to lose his cool.

Smith said Taylor’s “girlfriend” had witnessed Smith’s son accidentally knock one of Taylor’s championship belts onto the ground. After Smith had talked to the girlfriend, Taylor supposedly found out about it and became enraged. Smith claims Taylor had done drugs before the incident took place.

Smith said Taylor allegedly shot a gun “upside” his head, leaving his ear ringing. Smith claims his one year-old daughter was on his hip when Taylor fired the weapon. Taylor, according to police reports, also pointed the gun at Smith’s wife and other children.

The incident happened at Wright Ave. and Wolfe, according to Lt. Sidney Allen with LRPD, who says a traffic stop occurred later at Wright Ave. and MLK where Taylor was taken into police custody. Allen added a weapon was recovered.

Taylor is currently on probation on charges of shooting his cousin.

In early December, Taylor pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree battery and terroristic threatening after being accused of shooting his cousin, Tyrone Hinton, inside Taylor’s home in August 2014. His trial is set to begin in June.

In late December, Pulaski County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Taylor’s home after a 911 caller reported a brick had been thrown through a car window.

When deputies got there, they said a woman told them she had damage to her vehicle and small cuts on her elbow, and that Taylor was cooperative. No one was arrested.
